Custaloga Scout Reservation Job Descriptions

AQUATICS DIRECTOR (21+)

MUST BE AVAILABLE FROM JUNE 6 – AUGUST 6

Responsible to: Program Director

Duties are as follows:

  • Responsible for the entire Aquatic Area and operation which includes the swimming area, Water Front Area, French Creek, and any off-site aquatic areas.

  • Responsible for the following merit badges and certifications: Swimming, Lifesaving, Rowing, Canoeing, Kayaking, Motor Boating, Small Boat Sailing, Fishing and Fly Fishing, Learn to Swim, Mile Swim, Polar Bear Swim, Scout Lifeguard Training, BSA Snorkeling, etc.

  • Responsible for the periodic French Creek canoe day trips down French Creek and off-site water activities.

  • Holds a current B.S.A. Aquatic Training Card or American Red Cross Water Safety Instructors Card. Paid for by FCC – requires week-long overnight training and/or local American Red Cross classes.

  • Responsible for maintaining the policies set forth by B.S.A. and the French Creek Council regarding the health and safety of staff, campers, and visitors.

  • Strictly enforce the 8-Point Defense Swim Plan and Safety A’float Plan, and teach these plans to the Scouts and Scouters attending camp. A waterfront orientation will be given to all troops each week.

  • Follows an instructional schedule and is in charge of all instructions.

  • Has charge of swimming classification on Sunday afternoons and the rest of the week when needed.

  • Sees that the entire waterfront area is ready for operation, i.e.: review of equipment checklist, poles, ropes, buddy boards, first aid kit, boats, Kayaks and canoes.

  • Is ultimately responsible for the condition, maintenance, and inventory of all pool and Water Front equipment.

  • Responsible for all French Creek Council water activities.

  • Develop and administer additional water activities such as glow stick swim and water polo each week with the aid of the Program Director.
  • Holds certification in and/or equivalent Red Cross Standard First Aid and CPR Pro (adult, child, & infant).

  • Ensure that all paid Aquatic Staff are qualified as a BSA Scout Lifeguard by the end of Staff Week.

  • Actively engage in camp staff activities including, but not limited to: assisting at meal times as needed, participating in songs and skits for campfire programs, assisting with camper check-in and check-out, cleaning and maintain camp facilities.

  • Is responsible for all aquatics advancement records, which will be turned in to the Program Director at the end of each day.

  • Be a prime example of the Scout Oath and Law at all times.

  • All other duties as assigned by the Program Director.

WATER FRONT & POOL AQUATICS STAFF (15+)

MUST BE AVAILABLE FROM JUNE 6 – AUGUST 6

Responsible to: Aquatics Director

Duties are as follows:

  • Assist the Aquatics Director in carrying out his/her responsibilities.

  • Responsible for knowing and teaching the following merit badges and certifications: Swimming, Lifesaving, Rowing, Canoeing, Kayaking, Motor Boating, Small Boat Sailing, Fishing and Fly Fishing. Training is provided.

  • Be responsible for the care and maintenance of all pool and water front equipment.

  • Holds certification in and/or equivalent Red Cross Standard First Aid and CPR Pro (adult, child, & infant).

  • Hold current certification in BSA Scout Lifeguard by the end of Staff Week.

  • Actively engage in camp staff activities including, but not limited to: assisting at meal times as needed, participating in songs and skits for campfire programs, assisting with camper check-in and check-out, cleaning and maintain camp facilities.

  • Be a prime example of the Scout Oath and Law at all times.

  • All other duties as assigned to him/her by the Aquatics Director.

CAMP OFFICE MANAGER (18+)

MUST BE AVAILABLE FROM JUNE 6 – AUGUST 6

Responsible to: Camp Director

Duties are as follows:

  • Manage office area, clerical duties, answer phones, support Camp Director, Assistant Camp Director, and Program Director.

  • Assists Camp Director during check in times as directed.

  • Manages and properly files all program area tracking records.

  • Reviews weekly campsite reservation to ensure proper capacity is available prior to check in.

  • Updates weekly merit badge requests and unit schedules.

  • Produces weekly camp slide shows and newsletters.

  • Actively engage in camp staff activities including, but not limited to: assisting at meal times as needed, participating in songs and skits for campfire programs, assisting with camper check-in and check-out, cleaning and maintain camp facilities.

  • Be a prime example of the Scout Oath and Law at all times.

  • All other duties as assigned to him/her by the Camp Director

CHAPLAIN: (18+)

MUST BE AVAILABLE FROM JUNE 6 – AUGUST 6

Responsible to: Camp Director

Salary Range: Volunteer Position

Duties are as follows:

  • Hold BSA National Camp School certification and/or be a member of the clergy.

  • Will conduct all chapel services and be responsible for all necessary preparations.

  • Coordinate and conduct proper counseling for the scouts in camp.

  • Inform and counsel campers on the religious awards and chaplain’s aid program.

  • Help in program areas and first aid cases.

  • Maintain accurate inventory records.

  • Chaplain job in many cases will contain another department head type job.

  • All other duties as assigned by the Program Director.

COPE & CLIMBING DIRECTOR: (21+)

MUST BE AVAILABLE FROM JUNE 6 – AUGUST 6

Responsible to: Program Director

Duties are as follows:

  • Required to have BSA National Camp School certification in CLIMBING. Paid for by FCC – requires week-long overnight training.

  • Is responsible for managing the climbing/rappelling activities and the Climbing Merit Badge.

  • Supervises the routine maintenance of the climbing events and the tower and completes all record keeping in accordance with B.S.A. climbing standards.

  • Trains and supervises the personnel assigned to the department.

  • Certifies his/her staff in accordance to B.S.A. policies.

  • Instructs Climb on Safety Classes.

  • Holds certification in and/or equivalent Red Cross Standard First Aid and CPR (adult).

  • Actively engage in camp staff activities including, but not limited to: assisting at meal times as needed, participating in songs and skits for campfire programs, assisting with camper check-in and check-out, cleaning and maintain camp facilities.

  • Be a prime example of the Scout Oath and Law at all times.

  • All other duties as assigned by the Program Director.

CLIMBING ASSISTANT: (One 18+ and one 16+)

MUST BE AVAILABLE FROM JUNE 6 – AUGUST 6

Responsible to: Climbing Director

Duties are as follows:

  • Work under the direction of the Climbing Director and perform duties assigned in that area.

  • Holds certification in and/or equivalent Red Cross Standard First Aid and CPR (adult).

  • Actively engage in camp staff activities including, but not limited to: assisting at meal times as needed, participating in songs and skits for campfire programs, assisting with camper check-in and check-out, cleaning and maintain camp facilities.

  • Be a prime example of the Scout Oath and Law at all times.

  • All other duties as assigned by the COPE/Climbing Director.

COUNSELORS IN TRAINING (14+)

MUST BE AVAILABLE FROM JUNE 6 – AUGUST 6

Responsible to: Area Directors

Salary Range: Unpaid

Duties are as follows:

  • CIT’s will have the opportunity to experience camp life as a staff member and thereby be able to make a determination if they want to be a regular staff member in future years.

  • Assist in program areas as directed.

  • Earn merit badges of choice throughout the summer.

ECOLOGY-CONSERVATION DIRECTOR: (18+)

MUST BE AVAILABLE FROM JUNE 6 – AUGUST 6

Responsible to: Program Director

Duties are as follows:

  • Responsible for the entire nature area and operation.

  • Works out and coordinates a schedule for all nature related merit badges, skill awards, and special activities. Merit Badge Include: Nature, Environmental Science, Mammal Study, Fish and Wildlife Management, Soil and Water Conservation, Reptile and Amphibian Study, and Weather.

  • Supervise and direct the nature assistants as to their specific responsibilities.

  • Holds certification in and/or equivalent Red Cross Standard First Aid and CPR (adult).

  • All other duties as assigned to him/her by the Program Director.

  • Actively engage in camp staff activities including, but not limited to: assisting at meal times as needed, participating in songs and skits for campfire programs, assisting with camper check-in and check-out, cleaning and maintain camp facilities.

  • Maintain records of all nature advancements, which he/she will turn over to the Program Director daily.

  • Be a prime example of the Scout Oath and Law at all times.

ECOLOGY-CONSERVATION SUPPORT STAFF: (15+)

MUST BE AVAILABLE FROM JUNE 6 – AUGUST 6

Responsible to: ECON Director

Duties are as follows:

  • Assist the Ecology-Conservation Director in carrying out his/her responsibilities. This includes instructing and supervising special ecology conservation activities.

  • Provide instruction in the Ecology-Conservation Merit Badges including: Nature, Environmental Science, Mammal Study, Fish & Wildlife Management, Weather, Soil & Water Conservation, and Reptile & Amphibian Study.

  • Be responsible for the care and maintenance of all ecology conservation related equipment.

  • Actively engage in camp staff activities including, but not limited to: assisting at meal times as needed, participating in songs and skits for campfire programs, assisting with camper check-in and check-out, cleaning and maintain camp facilities.

  • Be a prime example of the Scout Oath and Law at all times.

  • Carry out other duties as assigned to him/her by the Ecology-Conservation Director.

HANDICRAFT DIRECTOR: (18+)

MUST BE AVAILABLE FROM JUNE 6 – AUGUST 6

Responsible to: Program Director

Duties are as follows:

  • Operates the handicraft program.

  • Provides instruction in the handicraft merit badges including: Art, Pottery, Sculpture, Basketry, Wood Carving, Pulp and Paper, Leatherwork, and Painting.

  • Holds certification in and/or equivalent Red Cross Standard First Aid and CPR (adult).

  • Actively engage in camp staff activities including, but not limited to: assisting at meal times as needed, participating in songs and skits for campfire programs, assisting with camper check-in and check-out, cleaning and maintain camp facilities.

  • Keep records of all advancements and hand into the Program Director daily.

  • Be a prime example of the Scout Oath and Law at all times.

HANDICRAFT SUPPORT STAFF: (15+)

MUST BE AVAILABLE FROM JUNE 6 – AUGUST 6

Responsible to: Handicraft Director

Duties are as follows:

  • Operates the handicraft program as assigned by the Handicraft Director.

  • Provide instruction in the handicraft merit badges including: Art, Pottery, Sculpture, Basketry, Wood Carving, Pulp and Paper, Leatherwork, and Painting.

  • Report progress to the Handicraft Director.

  • Actively engage in camp staff activities including, but not limited to: assisting at meal times as needed, participating in songs and skits for campfire programs, assisting with camper check-in and check-out, cleaning and maintain camp facilities.

RANGER ASSISTANT (18+)

MUST BE AVAILABLE FROM JUNE 6 – AUGUST 6

Responsible to: Ranger

Duties are as follows:

  • He/she will perform all maintenance duties as assigned by the Camp Ranger.

  • Must be hard-working and reliable.
  • Knowledge of motorized lawn maintenance equipment helpful.

  • Be a prime example of the Scout Oath and Law at all times.

  • Carry out special duties as assigned by the Ranger and Camp Director.

SCIENCE-TECHNOLOGY DIRECTOR: (18+)

MUST BE AVAILABLE FROM JUNE 6 – AUGUST 6

Responsible to: Program Director

Duties are as follows:

  • Responsible for the entire Science and Technology program area and operation.

  • Works out and coordinates a schedule for all program activities and related merit badges. Merit Badges include: Photography, Engineering, Inventing, Digital Technology, Signs Signals and Codes, Game Design, Electricity, Space Exploration, and Chess.

  • Supervise and direct the science-technology assistants as to their specific responsibilities.

  • Holds certification in and/or equivalent Red Cross Standard First Aid and CPR (adult).

  • Actively engage in camp staff activities including, but not limited to: assisting at meal times as needed, participating in songs and skits for campfire programs, assisting with camper check-in and check-out, cleaning and maintain camp facilities.

  • Maintain records of all Science and Technology advancements, which he/she will turn over to the Program Director at the end of each day.

  • Be a prime example of the Scout Oath and Law at all times.

  • All other duties as assigned to him/her by the Program Director.

SCIENCE-TECHNOLOGY SUPPORT STAFF (15+)

MUST BE AVAILABLE FROM JUNE 6 – AUGUST 6

Responsible to: Sci-Tech Director

Duties are as follows:

  • Assist the Science and Technology Director in carrying out his/her responsibilities.

  • Be responsible for the care and maintenance of all science and technology related equipment.

  • Provide instruction in the Science-Technology merit badges including: Photography, Engineering, Inventing, Digital Technology, Game Design, Electricity, Signs Signals & Codes, Space Exploration, and Chess.

  • Actively engage in camp staff activities including, but not limited to: assisting at meal times as needed, participating in songs and skits for campfire programs, assisting with camper check-in and check-out, cleaning and maintain camp facilities.

  • Be a prime example of the Scout Oath and Law at all times.

  • Carry out other duties as assigned to him/her by the Science and Technology Director.

ARCHERY DIRECTOR (18+)

MUST BE AVAILABLE FROM JUNE 6 – AUGUST 6

Responsible to: Shooting Sports Director

Duties are as follows:

  • Assists the Shooting Sports Director in carrying out his/her responsibilities.

  • Be responsible for the care and maintenance of all Shooting Sports equipment.

  • Primary area of responsibility will be on the Archery Range and Action Archery.

  • May be reassigned to assist at rifle and shotgun.

  • Holds certification in and/or equivalent Red Cross Standard First Aid and CPR (adult).

  • Responsible for teaching Archery Merit Badge.

  • Actively engage in camp staff activities including, but not limited to: assisting at meal times as needed, participating in songs and skits for campfire programs, assisting with camper check-in and check-out, cleaning and maintain camp facilities.

  • Must submit all completion records to the Program Director daily.

  • Be a prime example of the Scout Oath and Law at all times.

  • All other duties as assigned by the Shooting Sports Director.

SHOOTING SPORTS DIRECTOR (21+)

MUST BE AVAILABLE FROM JUNE 8 – AUGUST 8

Responsible to: Program Director

Duties are as follows:

  • Must be certified in Shooting Sports through B.S.A. National Camp School or NRA equivalent.

  • Should manage and maintain the Shooting Sports areas and equipment.

  • Possibly Instruct rifle, shotgun and/or archery merit badges.

  • Supervise the archery instruction and area.

  • Develop other shooting sports activities as deemed necessary.

  • Holds certification in and/or equivalent Red Cross Standard First Aid and CPR (adult).

  • Actively engage in camp staff activities including, but not limited to: assisting at meal times as needed, participating in songs and skits for campfire programs, assisting with camper check-in and check-out, cleaning and maintain camp facilities.

  • Keep records of all advancements and hand into the Program Director daily.

  • Be a prime example of the Scout Oath and Law at all times.

  • All other duties as assigned by the Program Director.

SHOOTING SPORTS SUPPORT STAFF(15+)

MUST BE AVAILABLE FROM JUNE 6 – AUGUST 6

Responsible to: Shooting Sports Director

Duties are as follows:

  • Assists the Shooting Sports Director in carrying out his/her responsibilities.

  • Be responsible for the care and maintenance of all Shooting Sports equipment.

  • Primary area of responsibility will be on the Rifle or Archery Range as assigned.

  • Holds certification in and/or equivalent Red Cross Standard First Aid and CPR (adult).

  • Actively engage in camp staff activities including, but not limited to: assisting at meal times as needed, participating in songs and skits for campfire programs, assisting with camper check-in and check-out, cleaning and maintain camp facilities.

  • Be a prime example of the Scout Oath and Law at all times.

  • All other duties as assigned by the Shooting Sports Director.

SCOUTCRAFT DIRECTOR (18+)

MUST BE AVAILABLE FROM JUNE 8 – AUGUST 6

Eagle Scout helpful, but not required.

Responsible to: Program Director.

Duties are as follows:

  • Must be well versed in scout skills and Leave No Trace as set forth by the BSA.

  • Responsible for the entire Outdoor Skills area and operation.

  • Works and coordinates a schedule for all Scout Skills related merit badges, and special activities. Merit Badges include: Camping, Geocaching, Cooking, Emergency Preparedness, First Aid, Wilderness Survival, Orienteering, Search and Rescue, Hiking, Fire Safety, and Safety.

  • Supervise and direct the Scout Skills assistants as to their specific responsibilities.

  • Holds certification in and/or equivalent Red Cross Standard First Aid and CPR (adult).

  • Actively engage in camp staff activities including, but not limited to: assisting at meal times as needed, participating in songs and skits for campfire programs, assisting with camper check-in and check-out, cleaning and maintain camp facilities.

  • Maintain records of all Outdoor Skills advancements, which he/she will turn over to the Program Director daily.

  • Be a prime example of the Scout Oath and Law at all times.

  • All other duties as assigned to him/her by the Program Director.

SCOUTCRAFT SUPPORT STAFF (15+)

MUST BE AVAILABLE FROM JUNE 6 – AUGUST 6

Responsible to: Scout Skills Director

Duties are as follows:

  • Assist the Outdoor Skills Director in carrying out his/her responsibilities.

  • Be responsible for the care and maintenance of all Scout Skills related equipment.

  • Provide instruction in the Scout Skills merit badges including: Camping, Geocaching, Cooking, Emergency Preparedness, First Aid, Wilderness Survival, Orienteering, Search and Rescue, Hiking, Fire Safety, and Safety.

  • Actively engage in camp staff activities including, but not limited to: assisting at meal times as needed, participating in songs and skits for campfire programs, assisting with camper check-in and check-out, cleaning and maintain camp facilities.

  • Be a prime example of the Scout Oath and Law at all times.

  • All other duties as assigned to him/her by the Scout Skills Director.

TRADING POST MANAGER (18+)

MUST BE AVAILABLE FROM JUNE 6 – AUGUST 6

Responsible to: Camp Director

Duties are as follows:

  • Responsible for all money transactions.

  • Place orders through the Camp Director for merchandise needed in maintaining an adequate stock.

  • Keep the area outside the Trading Post clean and free of bottles, cans, and paper.

  • Keep accurate records as prescribed by the Camp Director.

  • Keep the Trading Post neat and clean at all times.

  • Operate the Trading Post according to established routine, B.S.A., and Pennsylvania ServSafe requirements.

  • Actively engage in camp staff activities including, but not limited to: assisting at meal times as needed, participating in songs and skits for campfire programs, assisting with camper check-in and check-out, cleaning and maintain camp facilities.

  • Turn over all moneys to the Camp Director at the end of each business day.

  • Be a prime example of the Scout Oath and Law at all times.

  • All other duties assigned to him/her by the Camp Director.

TRADING POST SUPPORT STAFF (15+)

MUST BE AVAILABLE FROM JUNE 6 – AUGUST 6

Responsible to: Trading Post Manager

Duties are as follows:

  • Assist with business transactions to be carried out on a cash or credit card basis and in a business like fashion.

  • Assist in keeping the area outside the Trading Post clean and free of bottles, cans, and paper.

  • Assist in keeping the Trading Post neat and clean at all times.

  • Assist in operating the Trading Post according to established routine, B.S.A., and Pennsylvania ServSafe requirements.

  • Actively engage in camp staff activities including, but not limited to: assisting at meal times as needed, participating in songs and skits for campfire programs, assisting with camper check-in and check-out, cleaning and maintain camp facilities.

  • Be a prime example of the Scout Oath and Law at all times.

  • All other duties assigned by the Trading Post Manager.
