Adult Leader Trainings

Prepared Leaders, Stronger Scouts

Being a trained leader in Scouting America is essential to delivering a safe, meaningful, and high-quality program for youth. Trained leaders understand the values and methods of Scouting, know how to support youth development effectively, and are prepared to guide Scouts through experiences that build character, citizenship, and leadership skills. Training ensures leaders are familiar with the rules, safety guidelines, and best practices that keep activities both fun and secure.

Moreover, trained leaders set the example. When adult volunteers commit to learning and growth, they demonstrate the same values of responsibility and preparedness that we strive to instill in Scouts. Whether it’s teaching outdoor skills, supporting youth-led leadership, or handling emergencies, trained leaders are better equipped to respond with confidence and integrity. Ultimately, training empowers adults to help Scouts thrive and that’s at the heart of what Scouting is all about.

What is IOLS?

Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills (IOLS) is a hands-on training course required for all Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters in Scouting America. IOLS is designed to equip adult leaders with the practical outdoor skills they need to help Scouts develop confidence and self-reliance in the outdoors. The training covers fundamental Scouting skills such as setting up camp, cooking, working with wood tools, first aid, fire building, plant and animal identification, orienteering, knot tying, and more.

Through IOLS, leaders not only learn how to teach these skills effectively to youth but also gain a deeper understanding of the patrol method and the importance of the outdoor program in Scouting. The course is typically conducted over a weekend in a camping environment, providing a real-world setting that mirrors the experience Scouts have on their own outings.

What is BALOO?

BALOO (Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation) is a training program  designed to equip adult leaders with the essential skills and knowledge needed to plan and conduct safe, fun, and meaningful outdoor activities for Cub Scouts. BALOO is required for at least one adult leader on any Cub Scout overnight camping trip and is typically a combination of an online prerequisite course followed by an in-person, hands-on training session. The course covers a wide range of topics, including campfire planning, outdoor cooking, first aid, safety, and age-appropriate outdoor activities.

The purpose of BALOO training is to ensure that Cub Scout camping experiences are conducted in a way that promotes learning, adventure, and responsibility while maintaining a high standard of safety. It empowers leaders to confidently take their dens and packs into the outdoors, creating memorable experiences that foster teamwork, resilience, and a love for nature among young scouts. By completing BALOO, leaders not only fulfill a requirement but also gain the confidence and skills necessary to support the goals of the Scouting program in an outdoor setting.
